PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Dona Ana County officials, faced with a critical need for expanded facilities, chose to renovate a downtown building originally constructed in 1927 as Las Cruces Union High School. Because the building is listed on the New Mexico Register of Historic Buildings, this $4.7 million project called for imagination, insight, and creativity.
Project was awarded three design awards. The west façade of the building, with its rich historical elements, was left intact and restored, and the towering brick smokestack at the back of the old building became the design focal point for the new entrance. The State Historical Association requested the addition contrast with the original design.
